Although java is helping to simplify web programming, Java invented a new type of networked program called the applet that changed the way the online world thought about content on the web. Java also addressed some of the sharpest issues associated with the Internet i.e. portability and security.

What is Java Applet and mobile applet?

An applet is a small Java program that is designed to be transmitted over the Internet and automatically executed by a Java-compatible web browser. An applet downloads the user demand on a page without interacting with the user.

Mobile applet refers to the movable applet which can be supported by very small and tiny mobile devices. The mobile applet is programmed in java which supports all web browsers to show the results for search engines.

If a user clicks a link that contains an applet, the applet will be automatically downloaded and gets started in the browser. Applets are wished-for small programs. They are mainly used to display data provided by the server, controls user inputs, or provide simple functions, that execute locally, rather than on the server. The creation of the applet changed Internet programming because it makes the internet objects portable that can move freely in cyberspace. These objects can be categorized in two forms that are transmitted between the server and the client are Offline (passive information) and Online (active programs). For example, when you read downloaded e-mail, you are viewing offline data and when you read online magazines you are using an active applet. But the same active magazine will be passive when that is completely loaded on a web page. The applet continuously reloads and updates the page to try to make it active and updated. So, the applet is a dynamic(active), self-executing program. Thus, an applet is a program that is an active agent on the user’s computer, yet it is initiated by the server. Applet arises the problems in the areas of security and portability also solved by itself. Obviously, a program that downloads and executes automatically on the user’s computer must be protected from doing harm. It must be able to run on a variety of different platforms and under different operating systems. Java solved these problems in an effective and smart way.

We are aware of it that by downloading the programs we are taking risks because the code might contain a virus, Trojan horse, or other harmful code. At the core of the problem, is known that malicious code can cause its damage because it has gained unauthorized access to system resources. A virus program might collect private data, such as credit card numbers, bank account balances, and passwords, by searching the matters of your computer’s local file. In order for Java to enable applets to be downloaded and executed on the client computer safely, it was essential to prevent an applet from launching such an attack. Java achieved this protection by confining an applet to the Java execution environment and not allowing it contact to other parts of the computer. The ability to download applets with confidence that no harm will be done and that no security will be cracked is considered by many to be the single most innovative aspect of Java.

Internet is imperfect is if it lacks the feature of portability because there are many different types of computers and operating systems connected to it. If a Java program were to be run on any computer connected to the Internet, there needed to be a way to enable that program to execute on different systems. In the case of an applet, the same applet must be able to be downloaded and executed by the wide range of CPUs, operating systems, and browsers connected to the Internet. It is not practical to make different versions of the applet for different computers and environments. It is necessary that the same code must work on all computers. So, the applet fulfills the needs of generating portable executable code. As the same mechanism that helps ensure security also helps create portability.
